Sugar, it is one of the basic things one has in the kitchen because it is one of the main elements in the food that we eat every day. Whether it be baking, cooking, or simply in the preparation of drinks, sugar is a staple product and everyone is surely familiar on its many uses.

Another Top Summer Destination in the Philippines: Siargao

Fun and adventure is what we have in mind as summer starts. It is treating ourselves to pure pleasure and relaxation after a yearlong of working, studying, or just doing nothing. And there is nothing more fun than exploring with the best nature can provide. Top on the list is Siargao Island.

Considered to be the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines”, it is a tear-drop shaped island in the Philippine Sea, located in the province of Surigao del Norte, North-eastern part of Island Mindanao. It has the best surfing waves and a worldwide reputation for its thick, hollow and heavy right hand barreltubes known as Cloud 9. It is a reasonably affordable destination for surfers and adventure-seekers with inexpensive accommodations, restaurants and bars to choose from

People, Food and Beverages

In Siargao, you can be assured that the foods served are fresh! They only prepare the food after ordering. The 30 – 45 minutes waiting time wouldn’t be that long knowing that what is ahead is a fiesta of seafood. We recommend the grilled “tanigue” belly (blue marlin), steamed crabs, “kinilaw na bariles” (raw yellow fin tuna in coconut vinegar, spices and chilli,  known to be the Philippine counterpart of sashimi in Japan), sweet and sour “lapu-lapu” (grouper), and baked mussels with butter and cheese. You may also try the “surfer’s bread”, a bread shaped like a surfing board and can be bought on a local bakery. However, we advise you to bring bottle water because most of drinking water comes from wells. Nightlife usually starts at nine in the evening till you drop. Local strong beer with a red horse on the label is one of the favourite beers of the yuppies and oldies. Like most Filipinos, a warm smile from the locals always assures us that we are always welcome and safe with them.

 Islands, Beaches and Resorts

The white sand beaches and coral reefs of Daka and Guyam Islands in Siargao are world-class, ideal for surfing, diving and snorkelling. Adventure seekers can go surfing and diving while the family enjoys swimming and snorkelling in pristine blue water and diversity of corals that sheltered variety of fishes. Room rates on comfortable non-air-conditioned rooms to cosy and elegant cottages ranges from USD 12.00 – 20.00 per night only. The window view of the cottages facing the Pacific Ocean is truly an awe-inspiring experience. A walk in the beach at night under the serine dark back draft of sky and lone dim light from the moon will set the mood for couples to fall in love.

From Manila, you can reach Siargao via Surigao City in a 2 hours flight time and take a 2-hour ferry to Dapa, the main port in Siargao. Direct flight from Cebu City to Siargao is also available five times a week. But before going there, be sure to have enough cash with you, there is no ATM in the island. Bring also some first-aid kit; the nearest hospitals are in Surigao City and have stock loads for prepaid phone subscribers, it is hard to get a load during peak months.

Surigao del Sur's Hidden Treasures

I was born in Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Philippines. It is located in the Eastern Part of Mindanao. It is known for the dusty, poor roads. I never thought that it would be improved in my lifetime! But not until two years ago, when construction of the Surigao del Sur highway started.

On August 5, 2010, I had a chance to have a week-long vacation with my family and the whole clan for our first grand reunion. I could not believe that the once considered highway to nowhere is now a first class, well-constructed and maintained highway. It not only improves business and commerce, but also opens the hidden treasures of the province to the whole world.

Britannia Island's White Beach, San Agustin

Composed of 20 or more islands and islets, this features fine white sands and blue water. On sunny weather, contrast of white sands and blue to dark blue water is an awe-inspiring view. The silica in the sand glistens like minute diamonds under your feet. Strolling in the beach barefoot is a walk in the spa that relaxes your tired feet. Swimming in the clear water is a refreshing experience and the cool breeze from the pacific calms down your mind as it adds up to the one of a kind encounter with nature.

Enchanted River in Hinatuan

Hidden in the thick vegetation of Hinatuan, is a river that seems to originate from the side of the mountain. From the plain view from the top, cool water rose from the unfathomable underwater cavern to the pool-like basin which exits to the sea. The short swim across the basin energizes your body. Schools of different kinds of fishes are a magnificent view during feeding time.

Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig City

Considered as the Niagara Falls of Philippines, these 3 tiered majestic waterfalls is nature at its best. Bamboo rafts will carry you to the bottom of the 55 meters falls for a cool bath. You can experience a soothing massage-like feeling as the water touches your body. Exotic ferns and orchids can also be seen in both sides of the falls. A rainbow overhead the waterfalls in the morning is a splendid view.

I once cursed our leaders for our bad roads. But that changed now! I am now proud of my province and definitely be shouting to the whole world that Surigao del Sur is truly a paradise worth exploring!

You can also experience the beauty and warm hospitality of the people of Surigao del Sur. Special tour packages are available at a very affordable price Contact emgeli@hotmail.com

New Social Video Service for iPhone Launched

Tokyo, Japan –  Miew Inc., a subsidiary of  Samurai Incubate Inc., launched its new Social Video Service Application for iPhone, called “5Seconds”, aimed to provide new communication platform for iPhone users utilizing a 5-second video complete with audio and personalized end credit message similar to last scene of a movie.

Social Video Service “5Seconds” is a new type of free communication service that adds end credit, effects and messages on the 5-second movie taken on an iPhone. The length of movie is limited to five seconds; however, the concept of 5Seconds is to establish communication between users by short videos. The system allows users to easily “Take, Edit, Add Effects and Watch” movies on their iPhone.

“With 5Seconds, users can make cool videos that is like the last scene of the movie, share those movies on Facebook, Twitter, and 5Seconds Portal, make communication with emotions by adding end credit message, enjoy 5Seconds movies without hassles of registration or any other sign up, and manage movies easily on Album tab, sending 5Seconds contents and events on the application”, Shinnosuke Tone, CEO of Miew Inc. said.

5Seconds is a similar idea to that of numerous Silicon Valley related companies but instead of photo sharing with added expressions; it uses 5-second video plus the stylish effects with the ability to share on Twitter and Facebook. The time limit of 5 seconds is based on the assumption that most people are not interested in watching personal video for more than 10 seconds, similar to the concept of 140 characters for Twitter.

Users can share their 5-second videos to broadcast events such as trips, parties, sport activities, or simple birthday calls to facebook, personal video logs, various scenes where you can take 5 seconds video, and text messages by end credit function.

5seconds is currently available in English and is only available on iPhones; however, by year end, it will be able to support Android devices and aims to get 300 million users. 5seconds developers are now also thinking incorporating pre-written messages, quotes, and poems to preloaded videos that will match user’s emotion.
